Here is the article written by a very enthusiastic (and quit drunk at the time, I suppose) Finnish correspondent for Helsingin Sanomat:

LORDI, LORDI, LORDI, what HAVE you done?

Finland finally wins Eurovision Song Contest with monster-rockers' "Hard Rock Halleluja"

Now we have seen it all!
As the television commentators cracked halfway through the voting, intelligent life will be found on Mars before Finland wins the Eurovision Song Contest.
Wrong. Sooooo wrong!

Amid scenes that can only be described as completely indescribable, Finland’s monster rockers Lordi actually went and DID it!
Years of humiliation, frustration, and “zero points” were wiped away as the Finnish entry blew everyone off the stage in Athens and collected serious votes - and not the usual scraps - across the board from practically every televoting jury.
It was clear well before halfway that the Finnish tidal wave had arrived, and when the United Kingdom voters gave Finland 12 points, one knew somehow that nothing would ever be quite the same again. As if this was not earth-shattering enough, the French voters gave us eight points. When was the last time Finland got anything but charity points from the land of the chanson?

The final scores left no room for iffing and butting: Lordi not only won by a street, they also set a new points-record for the competition. Lordi and Hard Rock Hallelujah collected 292 points, more than forty points ahead of the Russian entry, with Bosnia & Herzegovina in third place.
The result means that Finland will have to host the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, a monstrous challenge in itself, and that there will be a joyful homecoming celebration in Helsinki on Monday night.
We shall naturally return to this subject in our Monday edition.
Meanwhile, there is nothing to say but...

Finland rocks! Hallelujah!

Well, it hit close enough for me - Sami Kuoppamaki, a legendary drummer on the Finnish music scene, was swept away with his family off the coast of Thailand. It's hard to describe what his music meant to a lot of us. Try to imagine the day Hendrix died and you wil have an idea. The band he was in, Kingston Wall, was one of the greatest rock bands I have ever heard and very spiritual in lyrics and sound. They never gained international fame as is the fate of most bands coming from small countries, but few were as good and profound IMO. I look at his smile on the album sleeve and I cry...

Greetings those interested in the music here in Finland. Well, I'll give my take on the scene so far this year. I'd have to say it's pretty stagnant. Nothing fresh has hit my ears this year. Locally, a lot of the good bands of years past seem to have dispersed or are swimming the murky, moribund waters. Sad to say it. The summer festival calander draws little appeal (except, of course, for the Faces Ethnofestival which is constantly good). Each major festival seems to have one or two bands I'd like to see but not enough to make it worth the trouble. I think we have a problem with poor promoters, for one thing. A lot of the club touring bands go as far as Stockholm and then turn back west. It shouldn't be that hard to get them to extend a leg of their tour across the Baltic sea, especially since Finns now have the money and the willingness to pay 30-40 to catch a good gig. The variety of quality international acts that play in Stockholm has just exploded in the last 5 years and I can only hope that the same will happen in Helsinki soon so I don't have to make as many trips over to Sweden to see shows. The next one I will make the crossing for is Patti Smith in July. Here's hoping Finland gets a hit of inspiration soon, from global as well as local sources.
